Cold Man

Walking along a stream one day, a young boy, age six, falls over the knotted roots of an old oak. This isn't an uncommon occurrence, seeing as how this boy's feet can almost outrun his legs. But this time, the boy notices something he's never seen before.

On the ground is a penny, dated 1935. As any young boy, he is filled with joy -elation- over finding this treasure beyond belief. He pockets the old penny, runs home, even avoiding tripping over anything, feet or otherwise.

Only a few feet from home, the boy stops in his tracks. He's seen something. Something very odd and out of place. He slowly turns around.

To the right of the boy is a sad old man. Icy wind permeates from within him, turning everything around him into frozen death. This man says nothing, he simply holds out his hand to the boy, pointing almost, to the pocket inside the boy's trousers.

The boy, more frightened than he could remember, sends his unsteady hand into his pocket to get the penny, he then notices that the penny is much warmer than earlier. He takes the penny out and walks toward the spectre who had no name.

When the old man's hand grips the penny, a shock is sent into the boy's body.

"I walked like you walk, I ran like you once. Now I'm a demon, hated, never to be free. That storm of '53, sent winds through this forest like never before. I was running home, I had just made that penny cleaning a voodoo man's hut. But then, a tree branch fell, caught the back of my leg, held me there. I couldn't move, I was paralyzed. Two long, agony-filled days passed. No one came to find me. I laid my head down and gave into death. Or what I thought death would be. No, God has more for me to do, I think. I can't speak to anyone, show myself to anyone, unless they carry that penny. It holds a lot of voodoo magic, it stole my soul away. Please, little boy, please... Set my soul free."

"How can I do that?" asked the boy.

"Take the penny far away. Away from where I died. Then I will be free."

The boy then ran, and threw the penny in a river, and watched it get swept away. Ice rose from the depths of the river, then melted away... The man with no name was free.
